Dr. Shiva Ayyadurai, four time PHD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology is a one-of-a-kind person. An inventor and polymath, he is also running for the U.S Senate in 2020.
He is the original inventor of Email in 1977 and was the first person to copyright his invention. Although, it is not widely known in the present time that he in fact invented Email. Nevertheless, he lays claim to this in convincing fashion.
Born in Mumbai in 1963, his parents were from the generation that immigrated to the United States in the early 70’s. He recounts candidly in an interview that in those days, the United States of America was a meritocracy and they wanted to see his father’s resume before granting him immigration status to the United States of America, unlike present day America, which is more sympathetic and welfare oriented, which he doesn’t approve off.
Shiva has been thoroughly interested in Science, Technology and Biology right from his childhood. He remembers vividly the time spent with his grandmother, at the age of 5, in her village in South India, learning the practice of Siddha, the traditional Indian medicinal techniques which tackles medicine and healing the body from a completely wholistic perspective rather than just looking at symptoms and disease, which is what the modern allopathic approach comprises of. He enjoyed learning from her and was very fascinated by the completely integrative healing methods which gave equal importance to the spirit, mind and the physical body.
His consistent lifelong dedication to science, technology and innovation has earned Shiva Ayadurrai very high honours in the corporate, academic and scientific spheres. Despite all this, he has never lost touch with India’s ancient wholistic healing traditions and has always sought to combine the scientific methods of the West with the ancient practical wisdom of the East.
Shiva was a prodigy and got selected as a teenager to join New York University’s special program in computer science at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Science. He further got recruited to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey as a Research Fellow. He was soon presented with a unique and challenging task by his coach at the UDMNJ. He was asked to create an electronic version of the internal office communications system, replacing the hardcopies that had to be distributed with an electronic system to make it more efficient and with much less use of paper. In essence, this led to the invention of the Email, which is used so commonly today, that no one actually knows where the term first originated. Shiva got it copyrighted at the time he invented it, which was the same as getting it patented in the 1970’s. Shiva introduced the world’s first true email system, incorporating Inbox and Outbox, Folders, Address Book, Memo, and other now — customary features of every email system.
After that, Shiva has gone on to achieve many incredible feats of awards and joined all the genius societies, Sigma-Xi, Eta Kappa Nu and Tau Beta Pi. He supports the Shanthi Foundation, which raises money to provide scholarships for education of orphaned girls. He is also a supporter of non-profit organizations including the Guggenheim Museum, Very Special Arts, National Public Radio, and the National Geographic Society. Ayyadurai lives in Belmont, Massachusetts and enjoys yoga, tennis, animals, art and architecture.
He truly is a Renaissance man and is standing for the Senate in 2020, from Massachusetts.
