Arunachal Woman Joins US Army

Niki Lego, a charming young woman from Arunachal Pradesh, is making waves in India after news spread that she had joined the US Army. Analysts were quick to point out that Niki’s achievement was a sterling example of both women empowerment and the fact that Indians had the capability to foray worldwide into any field.

Niki had been recruited into the US Army in June 2019, without much fanfare. But after Niki posted a profile picture on social media with her US Army uniform, it created quite a sensation.

After training, Niki is based in Georgia and works for the system management and engineering team of the US Army.

Social media platforms including Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook are excited about Niki’s achievement and so is Ninong Ering, former member of Parliament from Arunachal Pradesh, who has called her an inspiration for the youth of Arunachal. Social media users are calling Niki a symbol of women empowerment, an inspiration for young girls and the pride of North-East India.

After doing her schooling in Siang Model School Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, Niki  graduated in political science from Lady Keane College, Shillong. She then did her post-graduation in mass communication from Delhi University, which enabled her to take up  a job in the hospitality sector as relationship manager in ITC Sheraton, New Delhi. She also worked in Google’s public relations office in the capital.

Later, she relocated to the US to work as a public relations officer in several Indian origin companies.

After that, joining the US Army was a life changing move for Niki.

Niki draws inspiration from her parents. Her father Anong Lego is director of agriculture in the Arunachal Pradesh government, while her mother Yayir Riba Lego is the vice president of BJP’s state Mahila Morcha.
